A reintroduction project of the Sicilian rock partridge (Alectoris graeca whitakeri) is being launched on the island of Pantelleria, where the species has been extinct since 1874.
The project was proposed by the Fondazione Internazionale per la Biodiversità del Mediterraneo to the Parco Nazionale di Pantelleria, which approved it.
Project partners include the Istituto Sperimentale Zootecnico della Regione Siciliana, which will provide the rock partridges, and the Dipartimento di Sviluppo Rurale e Territoriale della Regione Siciliana, which will carry out the necessary preparations for the release of the birds on the island.
The Fondazione Internazionale per la Biodiversità del Mediterraneo will monitor the progress and success of the project.
