As part of this project, the Foundation, in collaboration with the Ornithological Station, has organised the bird ringing camp on Ustica, which this year reaches its twenty-eighth edition. The project involves a month of ringing activities in the same area (Tramontana locality), from mid-April to mid-May, carried out by ringers authorised by ISPRA and the Sicilian Region, using vertical nets (known as mist-nets) always set up in the same location.
In 2026 the camp began on 11 April, with the arrival of ringers from the Piedmontese Ornithological Group (Gruppo Ornitologico Piemontese). At the same time, a number of ornithologists are monitoring the progress of the migration. On 27–28 April 2026 several noteworthy birds were observed: among these, Pietro Vinciguerra photographed an immature Short-toed Snake Eagle Circaetus gallicus, several Red-footed Falcons Falco vespertinus, rare Black-eared Wheatears Oenanthe hispanica, and a European Roller Coracias garrulus. A good number of birds were also ringed, including a European Nightjar Caprimulgus europaeus, several Eurasian Scops Owls Otus scops, and a Common Cuckoo Cuculus canorus — a trans-Saharan species well known for parasitising the nests of other birds.
